Abstract

3TEX will build on the results of the Phase I projects funded by ONR to develop multi-functional composite material systems designed to both carry structural loads and provide blast protection. The emphasis in this proposed phase II effort will be on all composite solutions not involving metallic foam and metal or ceramic hard face. Using a combination of design-build-test and numerical analysis, several 3WEAVET based multi-functional materials will be designed and fabricated. Ballistic testing and mechanical characterization will be used to determine the final designs to be used for blast testing. Blast modeling will be performed to optimize the design of the material testing and will be used to predict their performance. Correlation between modeling and actual blast test results will be formed. Commercialization strategy of successful designs will be put in place for implementation on Navy shipboard structures.
