Cryogenically power electronics devices promise improved performance over conventional devices, and can be easily integrated with superconducting cables, motors, or generators. However, conventional packages do not work well at low temperatures, and often lead to device failure under cryogenic conditions. Providing cryogenically compatible packaging technologies would enable the use of cryogenic devices, especially IGBTs, in very high-power applications such as accelerator modulators, improving switching speeds and other performance characteristics. In phase I, MTECH Labs will design, fabricate, and test a bench-scale prototype cryogenic IGBT module operating at 6Kv AND 2Ka, AND IN Phase II, it will develop a number of commercial devices that could be utilized in various power conversion applications Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: Other commercial applications include future high-efficiency power distribution systems for buildings, power conversion equipment for wind turbines incorporating superconducting generators, utility-scale converters for use with superconducting transmission lines, and very power-dense motor drives for industrial uses.
