Abstract:

ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY (EOR) BY STEAM INJECTION IS IN WIDESPREAD USE. BETTER DIAGNOSTIC METHODS ARE NEEDED TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF THIS EXISTING TECHNOLOGY AND TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNOLOGY. THIS PROJECT CONSISTS OF A DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT STUDY OF KEY COMPONENTS REQUIRED FOR A DOWNHOLE STEAM QUALITY MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUE. THE MEASUREMENT METHOD, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENTLY CITED NEEDS, IS BASED ON FUNDAMENTAL CALORIMETRY AND THE BEHAVIOR OF SATURATED MIXTURES. COMPONENTS TO BE DEVELOPED INCLUDE VALVE CLOSURES, THERMAL INPUT SECTIONS, AND INSULATED SAMPLE CHAMBER SCHEMES. THE DESIGN CONDITION IS SATURATED STEAM AT 3,000 PSIA. THE ADVANTAGES OF THE PLANNED TECHNIQUE INCLUDE: LACK OF DOWNHOLE ELECTRONICS AND DOWNHOLE PRESSURE TRANSDUCERS, STRAIGHTFORWARD ELECTRO/MECHANICAL COMPONENTS, TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS ONLY, AND SUITABILITY FOR RUGGED DESIGN. THE WORK INCLUDES MECHANICAL AND THERMAL ENGINEERING DESIGN OF COMPONENTS TO BE TESTED AT THE DESIGN CONDITIONS. HEAT TRANSFER ANALYSES ARE BEING PROVIDED TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT WORK. THE RESULT OF PHASE I WILL BE A SCHEMATIC DESIGN WITH ALL MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING METHODS SELECTED FOR A PROTOTYPEDOWNHOLE STEAM QUALITY MEASUREMENT TOOL.
