Abstract:
Developing low cost, lightweight materials with high stiffness, that are environmentally safe, low risk/liability, and corrosion resistant is extremely important for the Department of Defense in the current climate of reduced spending and desire for increased performance. Reducing program life cycle costs for new materials in a program is also important, but additional desirable benefits for a new material include; reduction in component and system weight, providing multi-function capability, and limiting the use of potentially hazardous materials. This APS Phase I NAVY SBIR program plans to demonstrate these desirable characteristics in proven materials. The APS demonstrated nano composites provide many solutions to decreasing a systems mass, while providing multi-functional capability (corrosion resistance, modulus, low cost, etc.) within system components. APS has assembled a world-class team that is well versed in design, materials testing and manufacturing for aerospace structures to successfully complete this Phase I program.
