Abstract:
A novel solid state detector has been designed to detect radioactive isotopes in gas. It will detect tritium in the atmosphere in concentrations as low as 0.1 microCuries per cubic meter (1 picoCurie for cubic centimeter) in au intense background environment containing gamma rays and neutrons. The device takes advantage of recent electro-optical, material science, computer software and hardware developments to enable the device to be small, portable and lightweight. It is adaptable to detection of many radioactive isotopes in a liquid or gaseous medium. The detector is adaptable to remote, real time, in-situ sensing applications.
