High-Power Vertical-Cavity Laser Diode Arrays for Fiber Lasers

Aerius Photonics proposes to develop fiber laser pump modules based on Vertical-Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) arrays which can have a manufacturing cost ten times lower than the existing Edge Emitting Laser (EEL) technology. Aerius will demonstrate and deliver high power VCSEL array modules emitting at 976 nm wavelength. These modules can be used to pump Er-doped, Yb-doped and Yb/Er-codoped fiber lasers at a very efficient laser absorption wavelength. The module architecture can be extended to 795 nm pumps for Tm-doped fiber lasers. In Phase I, Aerius fabricated and tested 940 nm VCSEL devices and used these results to define the approach that would lead to the performance and cost objectives indicated. In Phase II, Aerius will optimize the VCSEL structure and semiconductor material to operate at 976 nm and to increase the device wall-plug efficiency. The program will also evaluate laser mode control architectures to maximize fiber coupling efficiency and develop packaging techniques that optimize thermal performance. Aerius will deliver two VCSEL pump modules to a fiber laser system manufacturer for characterization and testing.
