Abstract:

IN THIS STUDY, WE PROPOSE TO INVESTIGATE A NEW TYPE OF PLASMA ION SOURCE IN WHICH IONS ARE PRODUCED BY THE LASER PHOTODISSOCIATION OF A THALLIUM HALIDE VAPOR, SUCH AS OR . USING AN EXCIMER LASER AS A LIGHT SOURCE, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE APPROXIMATELY 10(18) CM(-3) , AND OR ION PAIRS PER LASER PULSE. TEN TO 100 SUCH PULSES COULD BE PRODUCED PER SECOND. THIS SOURCE IS POTENTIALLY FIVE ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE MORE INTENSE THAN PRESENTLY AVAILABLE SOURCES. THE PLASMA IS ELECTRON FREE AND OPERATES AT A RELATIVELY LOW TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 500 DEGREES C.
