Kinetic Fireball

The objective of the proposed project is to demonstrate the feasibility and military utility of employing a BLU-109 penetrator munition filled with an optimized load of Kinetic Fireball Incendiaries to neutralize biological and chemical agents that are stored in hardened bunkers. These innovative, self-propelled Fireballs, based on state-of-the art solid rocket propellant, are also capable of causing substantial incendiary damage throughout targeted structures. This is accomplished by highly effective convective heating of the interior of the facility to temperatures in excess of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit for the extended period of time necessary to accomplish complete destruction while avoiding massive explosive effects, which could result in the release of dangerous agents into the environment. During the proposed effort, a set of optimized Fireballs with various sizes and functions will be designed and demonstrated. At the conclusion of the project, a BLU-109 sized load of Fireballs will be deployed in a highly instrumented, multi-room bunker to measure the effects of these munitions on biological and chemical agents and the structures that contain them.
