Abstract:
This program addresses the development of a new fiber bundle technology for infrared imaging in the spectral range of 1-12 microns. Currently there is no single fiber system that covers this broad wavelength range. Agiltron proposed technology relies on the excellent IR properties of heavy halides (MXn, where X=Cl, Br, I), the only materials with the broad-band spectral transparency required. Based on the successful Phase I demonstration of heavy halide fiber drawn directly from a liquid phase, further Phase II efforts will optimize fiber process and bundle fabrication. By applying a novel technology called "fiber direct-drawn from liquid," fiber with unlimited length and thin diameter can be made that overcomes the intrinsic shortfalls of current IR fiber technologies. High performance fiber bundles will be developed and demonstrated. Agiltron's fiber bundle will exhibit high imaging resolution, mechanical flexibility, high imaging effective area ratio and low loss.
