Award Amount:
$100,000.00
Abstract:
70001 Current and next generation experiments in nuclear and particle physics require detectors with high spatial resolution, fast response, and accurate energy information. In many nuclear physics experiments, existing detector technology is the limiting factor. This project will investigate a promising detector concept with wide applicability to particle physics and many other applications. The position sensitive detector design, which can be operated with very high gain, should provide high signal-to-noise ratio; excellent position, timing, and energy resolution; and low cost. Phase I will demonstrate the feasibility of producing the hybrid position sensitive detector design in large area. High-resolution detection of scintillation light with the detector will also be demonstrated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new detectors should be very useful in fundamental studies conducted for nuclear and high energy physics, astronomy, and diffraction. In addition, these detectors would be useful in commercial applications such as medical imaging, non-destructive studies, and bore hole logging.
