Abstract:
Scintillation detectors, which consist of inorganic scintillation crystals coupled to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), are an important element of medical imaging applications such as positron emission tomography (PET). However, both the performance and cost-effectiveness of these systems is limited by the properties of the scintillation detectors available at present. This project will investigate a new class of scintillation materials that can be produced using a low cost fabrication approach. Phase I will demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Samples of these scintillators will be produced, and their performance will be evaluated.
