Abstract:
Non-attachment air quality regions will require the implementation of ultra-low-NOx boiler burner systems. Currently, only costly Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems can achieve 9 ppm NOx emissions. Alternative and inexpensive low NOx burners, that can meet the regulations without SCR, are urgently needed by the utilities industry.
Altex Technologies Corporation has identified the Minimum Emissions Burner System (MEBS) that has the potential to achieve very low NOx at low cost. Phase I test results have shown the ability of MEBS to reduce NOx to below 9 ppm. Most importantly, these results are achieved at a much lower cost than SCR, of ultra-low-NOx burners under development. Using the Phase I test results and cost data, it was estimated that the MEBS would be 70 to 90 percent lower in cost-to-remove-a-ton-of-NOx than FGR-based burner and SCR, respectively. This substantial cost advantage will drive the commercialization of the MEBS.
