Abstract

AMERICAN SCIENCE & ENGINEERING (AS&E) WILL DESIGN AND BUILD A LOW-DOSE, DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY SYSTEM BASED ON ITS MINIMAL DOSE DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY SYSTEM (MDDBR). AS&E NOW BUILDS AND SELLS A SINGLE-BEAM FLYING SPOT SYSTEM. THIS HAS PROVENTO BE VERY USEFUL IN PROVIDING DIAGNOSTIC IMAGES AT LOW DOSE(2M ROENTGENS SKIN ENTRANCE EXPOSURE) BUT IS LIMITED BECAUSEOF X-RAY TUBE LOADING FOR SHORT-TERM MULTIPLE IMAGES AND BECAUSE OF SPATIAL RESOLUTION FOR CHEST IMAGING. DURING PHASE I, AS&E WILL DO A DESIGN STUDY OF MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO EXTEND ITS MDDBR SYSTEM TO GENERAL RADIOGRAPHY. THIS WILL INCLUDE MECHANICAL STABILITY REQUIREMENTS, IMAGE ACQUISITION, AND DATA COMPRESSION. THE DESIGN STUDY WILL ALSO ADDRESS COST REDUCTION OF THE DETECTOR SYSTEM. PRELIMINARY IMAGES WILL ALSO BE TAKEN TO DEMONSTRATE THE CAPABILITY AND TO VERIFY MODULATION TRANSFER FUNCTIONS AND QUANTUM EFFICIENCY CALCULATIONS. DURING PHASE II, AS&E WILLPROPOSE TO MODIFY EQUIPMENT AT A CLINICAL SITE AND, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE RADIOLOGISTS AT THAT SITE, TEST THE SYSTEM TO CHARACTERIZE THE IMPROVEMENTS.
