Abstract:

Low-temperature superconductors have limited usefulness at very high magnetic fields or in high heat load applications, which are representative of some sections in future particle accelerators. In this project, the suitability of second generation (2G) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire will be explored for these environments. The characterization of this developing superconductor has been extensive at higher temperatures, but limited at the low temperatures typical of High Energy Physics applications. Phase I will conduct an extensive electrical and thermal characterization at temperatures between 4.2 and 27 K, and high magnetic fields. In Phase II, a substantial insert solenoid coil will be built to demonstrate the 2G HTS capability at 5 tesla. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The availability of second generation HTS should positively impact design opportunities for future dipole and quadrupole magnets. Commercial applications would include high field NMR, and superconducting motors, generators, transformers, and fault current limiters. The technology also should be of direct use in the electric utility industry and the US military.
