Assessing Electromagnetic Scattering Properties of Small Boats in Littoral Environments Using Hardware Accelerated Computing

The goal of this effort is to provide electromagnetic scattering tools (radar cross section/RCS codes) for small boats in littoral and deep ocean environments. This goal is within the larger scope of developing electromagnetic (EM) modeling and simulation (EMMS) tools for large scale simulations as is the case with boats within their innate environment (a sizeable patch of the surrounding ocean). The major challenge is the numerical size of the problem at hand, and the difficulty of incorporating rough sea effects. Applied EM is proposing state of the art computational tools, incorporating full wave and hybrid techniques that exploit hardware accelerated algorithms. Our approach is to develop a toolset of hybrid (moment method-high frequency) methodologies that function on the latest general purpose graphical processing units (GPGPU) boasting computational speed of 4TeraFlops. This speed has the potential to carry out in core computations for large dense matrices modeling realistic structures by exploiting GPGPU's parallel architecture. When combined with recent CPU speeds and memory growth, this approach can bring a paradigm change in computational EM (CEM) codes and their utility for design applications.
