Innovative Technologies for Knowledge Capture and Transfer in Space Systems Product Development
Agency / Branch:
DOD / USAF
The project goal is to develop a lessons learned system that enables users to capture, share, and apply prior problem-solving experiences to new situations. In order to overcome obstacles associated with current lessons-learned systems, such as weak case retrieval and overly specific point solutions, the proposed approach shifts the paradigm from the management of documents, to the management of knowledge. Our approach overcomes the limitations of text-based keyword search by applying advanced information technologies including case-based reasoning, utility theory, semantics, agents, and performance support services. Tacit project knowledge, experience, and expertise are captured from domain experts and practitioners, organized into ontologies, and refined into reusable knowledge "nuggets" - the lessons learned cases. When the retrieved cases do not provide or suggest an appropriate solution, users will have two additional options: the system can put the user in touch with relevant domain experts, or the system can guide practitioners to find a comprehensive systems solution based on case adaptation, best practices, or root cause analysis. Thus, critical knowledge in the form of relevant case situations and solutions can be readily retrieved, shared with others, and applied to enhance mission performance and broaden organizational capabilities.
