Abstract:

THE OBJECT OF THIS PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO PRODUCE MORE RELIABLE ESTIMATES OF EXTREME WINDS IN THE UNITED STATES BY SEPARATELY ANALYZING WINDS DUE TO THUNDERSTORMS AND LARGE SCALE EXTRATROPICAL STORMS. THE PRESENT STATE OF THE ART METHODS FOR ESTIMATING DESIGN WIND SPEEDS IN NON-HURRICANE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES DO NOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN WINDS ORIGINATING FROM THE LARGE SCALE EXTRATROPICAL PRESSURE SYSTEMS AND THE SMALL BUT INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS OF THE UNITED STATES. THESE TWO DIFFERENT METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA HAVE SEPARATE STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS AND SHOULD NOT BE HANDLED USING A SINGLE DISTRIBUTION AS IS CURRENTLY THE CASE. THE CORRECT METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF EXTREME WINDS REQUIRES SEPARATING WIND DATA ASSOCIATED WITH EACH PHENOMENA AND STUDYING EACH SEPARATELY. THE RESULTS OFSUCH AN APPROACH WILL LEAD TO A MORE STATISTICALLY RELIABLE ESTIMATE OF EXTREME WINDS IN THE UNITED STATES AND WILL PROVIDE INSIGHT INTO THE METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA WHICH PRODUCES THESE WINDS AT DIFFERENT LOCALITIES.
