Abstract:
"Synthetic environment exercises are a critical component in the DOD's strategy for testing CONOPS, training soldiers, and evaluating equipment. Communication is a vital component of these exercises, and communications data is a valuable information sourcefor AAR facilitation. However, communications analysis requires time-consuming transcription and processing.Technologies are being developed to address transcription and categorization problems. However, technology alone cannot solve this problem. To automate communications analysis, a systematic method of communications measurement is needed. Aptima ispioneering the field of communications measurement, developing and using measures of team performance and C4ISR processes based on communications for numerous military exercises. Our team will assess and apply state-of-the-art technologies to makecommunications data accessible. More fundamentally, this team will develop the necessary measurement structure for a system to yield useful results. Phase I will produce a theory-based Taxonomy of Communications measurement, tailored to the types of communications found in military exercises. This taxonomy will guide the selection of voice recognition, communications tagging, text parsing andautomated categorization technologies. And we will lay the foundations for the Phase II development of Auto-CAS (Automated Communications Analysis System), by defining the System Architecture and requireme
