LUCID: Limiting Uncertainty in Command Information Displays

Modern military systems employ a variety of models to realistically represent warfighting capabilities and the environment in which these capabilities operate. However, these models rarely represent the uncertainty inherent in real-world domains. Further, the systems rarely visualize uncertainty in decision-makers' command displays. This proposal outlines a research and development program to identify and remedy deficiencies in the portrayal of uncertainty in military decision support systems. Aptima working with its partner, Lockheed Martin, will modify and expand Aptima's MUSE (Modeling Uncertainty in Shifting Environments) model for Aegis command displays and design visualization techniques for representing individual information reliability and the aggregate uncertainty to the decision maker in an intuitive manner. Further we will conduct assessments of the model and the visualization techniques. LUCID (Limiting Uncertainty in Command Information Displays) will provide the commander of Navy ships greater situational awareness for making decisions.
