Award Amount:
$100,000.00
Abstract:
65879 This project will develop an improved catalyst for the selective synthesis of methanol from carbon monoxide. The catalysts will be synthesized from particles of catalytic metals, promoters, and/or supports that are encapsulated in an inorganic matrix. Phase I will synthesize, characterize, and evaluate the composite catalysts by establishing a performance benchmark. Phase II would optimize the catalyst preparation methodology, scale-up the laboratory recipe, and evaluate the catalyst for commercial manufacture. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: A cheaper, easier method of producing methanol, considered to be the fuel for the 21st century, should help promote new natural gas reforming technology, as well as provide derivatives such as formaldehyde and acetic acid
