Abstract:
Sizing of bead filters which are used for clarification and biofiltration in recirculating aquaculture production systems is based upon their volumetric nitrification rates. Attempts to improve these carrying capacities have been thwarted by the inherent nature of the media. This project will investigate the usefulness of two promising alternative media consisting of chopped tubing which display superior porosity while protecting biofloc during backwashing. The two sizes of tubes will be tested against the beads and sampled intensely so that performance characteristics can be determined.
