Abstract:
The ultimate goal of this research is to combine realistic visual 3-D computer models, a high-fidelity patient simulator, and augment reality devices to provide an effective platform for training medics and combat lifesavers. If successful this trainer will enable trainees in the medical field to perform selected tasks with a greater degree of confidence and competence and, if so, to cultivate this technology to ultimately contribute a valuable new dimension to medical simulation training and medical education at large. During Phase II, we will couple the technologies closely such that the 3D animations are coordinated with the actions being taken on the patient simulator. Further, we will expand the content areas to include hemorrhage, improper airway management, and tension pneumothorax. We believe this will be highly effective given the nature of both the visual component and the "hands on" component of medical education. This SBIR project will demonstrate proof of concept of this revolutionary new teaching model.
