Abstract

The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) has identified the need for a utility that will compress XML data prior to transmission over a network. This utility will address the recent proliferation of XML in military communication systems and the resulting data inflation associated with XML. No current XML compression tools available today are suitable for on-the-fly compression of XML data prior to transmission over networks. The Phase I effort successfully designed and demonstrated new techniques for efficient XML compression that performs optimally in a network environment. Analysis of Phase I efforts show that CompreX is capable of compressing XML data over 90% on average with no knowledge of DTDs or schemas of the XML content being compressed. Building on the successful Phase I design and implementation of CompreX, Architecture Technology Corporation (ATC) will implement and demonstrate a full-scale prototype of CompreX. CompreX's flexibility allows gives it the ability to integrate seamlessly, and transparently with legacy network applications as well as optimized integration with other network systems.
