Arete proposes to develop a wavelength converter to extend the STIL operating range into the near infrared. The converter exploits high quantum efficiency detectors, VLSI electronics and Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers. In Phase I multiple channel WC devices were produced and used to collect LIDAR imagery. The imagery demonstrates capture of returns from partially transparent objects, i.e. multiple returns per pixel, range resolution of 60cm, commensurate with the laser pulse used (~4ns), and pixel-to-pixel range resolution of better than 60cm. Single channel experiments demonstrated dynamic range of approximately 400:1 and a bandwidth of 1 GHz. An amplifier design that will be laid out in a multi-channel BiCMOS integrated circuit in Phase II was completed. The bandwidth of the amplifier is greater than 1 GHz, and the amp has a unique output stage that can comfortably provide the current required by the VCSEL. The Phase I accomplishments set the stage for a successful Phase II program. In Phase II a large pixel count WC will be produced for testing in the lab and the field. The effort will elucidate design issues in a risk-controlled manner, yielding a high probability of success for transition to Phase III applications. The results of Phase I and Phase II will allow STIL to be applied to laser radar problems where operation in the NIR is essential.
