Abstract:
NanoCeramr filtration media has been developed for purification of water. The active component is a nano alumina fiber only 2 nanometers in diameter. When dispersed with microglass fibers as part of a non-woven fibrous filter it is capable of retaining sub-micron and nanosize particles smaller than virus while maintaining a high flux. Such media has a dirt holding capacity tens of times greater than microglass, meltblown or membrane media, as well as a high filtration efficiency. The media is now being manufactured at a high rate using paper making technology. Pleated cartridges are now being marketed as a high performance turbidity filter. Multilayer depth media versions are being developed for portable as well as residential microbial water filters. Adaptation of the media for air filtration is proposed. Preliminary data show the media is capable of capturing a high level of virus containing aerosols. Initial DOP and NaCl tests show a retention exceeding 99%. During Phase I we will reduce pressure drop to that of HEPA media, while exceeding 99% retention of aerosolized 1¿m latex spheres, 0.2¿m DOP liquid and E coli bacteria. In Phase II we will develop a low pressure drop substitute that exceeds HEPA's performance.
