Abstract:
"Aspen Systems proposes to develop a small portable personal cooling system that may be used by the Special Operations Forces with or without NBC protective clothing. The approach proposed will rely on our miniature refrigeration technology previouslydeveloped. Our rotary compressor, developed to provide 300 Watts of cooling will be scaled up to meet the SOCOM requirements of 500 Watts. Technical risk is minimized as we have successfullly demonstrated that we can scale our compressor design up anddown as the application requires. A prototype cooling system will be fabricated prior to the end of the Phase I program, demonstrating the feasibility of our approach. The vapor compression based personal cooling system developed in this program willextend the operational effectiveness of the SOF operators and increases survivability in critical missions. Potential commercial applications of the product are numerous including uses in hazardous waste clean-up and disposal, mining, metal processing,power plants, law enforcement, the racing industry, fire fighting, and motorcycle riders.
