Every Department of Air Force (DAF) mission starts on the ground, where a fleet of essential vehicles—fuel trucks, power carts, towing rigs—prepares the aircraft for flight. At some bases, over 1,000 vehicles are relied on daily to ensure readiness, security, and safety. However, many sit idle due to maintenance delays, risking missions and lives. Logistics Readiness Squadrons (LRSs) suffer from outdated methods, leading to errors and delays in fleet management. The low rate of scheduled maintenance directly affects aircraft readiness, with critical assets like the B-1B Lancer bombers and F-22A Raptors struggling with less than 60% readiness. Interviews with 250 Airmen, fleet managers, and commanders across 30 USAF bases reveal the relentless efforts of Vehicle Management Airmen to keep vehicles operational. The 441st Vehicle Supply Chain Operations Squadron (VSCOS), managing 93,000 vehicles across ~350 locations, operates with critical blind spots. Without essential data and tools, they struggle to support bases effectively, resulting in a vehicle maintenance scheduling rate of just 29%, far below the industry standard of 80%.
