Accessible Virtual Reality for Machinist Training Modules
Phone: () -
This proposal will emphasize outfitting a virtual classroom and creating a skills (CNC) oriented training program. The virtual classroom will involve contextual learning using a realistic simulation of the manufacturing environment. The simulation will have all of the characteristics of a machine shop, but will allow the learner to explore and experiment ("discover") in ways that would not be practical or safe in a physical shop and to learn at a convenient time and place.
This proposal will emphasize training issues, in contrast to a companion SBIR proposal focused on basic math and science skills. Both documents will introduce the concept of "Discover Learning" as a mechanism that will assist adult learners in an unfamiliar environment. This proposal will develop and implement a substantive improvement of the NIST Technology Learning Modules environment in two areas: Simulation of a control panel and Simulation of tool cutting and material removal. A Phase II program is proposed to complete the "virtual machine shop" by Simulation of the machine environment and Machinist's aid in setting machine parameters. We then propose to develop a CNC training curriculum utilizing a mix of multimedua and our advanced simulation that uniquely meets the special needs of a mobile, adult workforce.
