The proposed SBIR program will accelerate the commercialization of multiplexed optical fiber networks and their use in both DoD and commercial systems. F&S (Fiber & Sensor Technologies, Inc.) proposes to implement all-optical low-loss switches for signal multiplexing in large networks. This new approach to multiplexing is based on the development of optically-activated in-line switches to automatically route 100% of the optical power to successive network nodes, thereby eliminating power division losses and increasing the number of devices that can be multiplexed. F&S envisions immediate use of such photonic switching products in combination with arrays of optical fiber strain and pressure sensors, already demonstrated and commercialized by F&S in cooperation with major U.S. aerospace manufacturers, DARPA and DoD laboratories. Such switches also have a very large potential market in self-routing optical fiber communication networks. The program builds directly upon the documented experience of F&S and subcontractors in the commercialization of optical fiber coupling devices and the demonstration of nonlinear all-optical fiber switch concepts in the laboratory. Non-Federal product commercialization funding is pledged for both Phase I and Phase II programs.
