This proposal describes the development of an instrument based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the detection of lead in paint and soil that will have both military and commercial applications. The Phase I instrument will be similar to multi-species, portable LIBS instruments built by Dr. David Cremers at Los Alamos National Laboratory that utilize a spectrograph/charge coupled device (CCD) for wavelength selection and light detection; however, modifications will be instituted during Phase I that will: - make the LIBS analyzer specific for the detection of lead - increase the sensitivity of the analyzer for lead - decrease the cost and complexity of the analyzer This will be accomplished by evaluating alternative wavelength selection/light detection devices such as interference filtered photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and acousto-optic tunable filtered PMTs. The final instrument will be cost-effective, simple enough to be operated by non-technical people, and rugged in design. ADA Technologies enters into this venture with the overall goal of building a profitable business based upon selling LIBS instruments and supplying field screening services for heavy metals on an "as needed basis" for those who do not need, or can not afford to buy, a LIBS system.
