A NOVEL, NONDESTRUCTIVE, LONGITUDINAL, CHARGED PARTICLE BEAMDIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO MEASURE LONGITUDINAL BEAM PROFILE AND CHARGE DENSITY DISTRIBUTION IS BEING STUDIED. THE CONCEPT IS BASED ON THE EFFECT OF MUTUAL ATTRACTIVE FORCES EXERTED BY THE PARTICLE BEAM ON A COLLINEAR ELECTRON BEAM OF MATCHEDVELOCITY. ANY MOVING CHARGED PARTICLE BEAM EXERTS AN ATTRACTIVE FORCE ON ELECTRONS IN ITS VICINITY. THIS FORCE IS RELATED TO THE POSITIVE CHARGE SEEN BY THE ELECTRON. ELECTRONS TRAVELING PARALLEL TO AND AT THE SAME VELOCITY AS THE BEAM ARE DEFLECTED BY AN ANGLE GIVEN BY THE FORCE AND INTERACTION TIME. THIS ANGLE OR POSITION IS DETECTED AND USED TO CHARACTERIZE THE MOVING PARTICLE BEAM NONDESTRUCTIVELY. SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME OF THE RESEARCH FILLS A NEED FOR BETTER LONGITUDINAL BEAM INFORMATION AT ACCELERATOR FACILITIES. THE PHASE I EFFORT WILL INVESTIGATETHE FEASIBILITY OF THE PLANNED CONCEPT BY ADDRESSING TWO KEYISSUES: (1) THE DETAILED PHYSICS OF BEAM-BEAM INTERACTIONS AND (2) GENERATION AND BEAM OPTICS OF THE ELECTRON BEAM.
