Abstract

As simulation becomes a tool at all levels of acquisition and development, there is a great need to be able to integrate multiple forms of simulation together for more comprehensive and thorough simulations. The two predominate forms of military simulation are operational simulation and functional behavioral simulation. Although they are used for different purposes, there is a need to integrate operational simulations with functional/behavioral simulations so that operational simulations can stimulate functional simulations, and functional simulation actions can be aggregated to the operational representation level- The primary challenges of integrating operational simulations with functional/behavioral simulations are (1) the diversity of functional simulations, and (2) the information/semantic disparity between operational simulations and functional/behavioral simulations. We propose to study, design, and develop mechanisms winch will provide dynamic, composable information flow between distributed simulation components with a focus on the integration of operational and functional/behavioral simulations. This technology will support "plug-and-play" integration of separate simulation processes and also the integration of operational simulations with real-world systems and subsystems. This new technology will be flexible, extensible, and well-encapsulated. This will greatly reduce the maintenance effort required to keep pace with evolving standards and evolving codes as well as supporting incorporation of legacy codes.
