The implications of the proposed investigations are that radar systems already implemented for the automotive industry can be exploited, adapted and optimized for this application. These radar systems are inexpensive, of small size, employ advanced processing techniques which allow the tracking of threat targets, transmit low average power (10 milliwatts) and are proven to be people safe. We will show that each person within the security perimeter can be tracked without recourse to biometrics as the individual moves behind both inadvertent and purposeful screening occurrences. The unique statistics for each individual tracked need only be differentiated from the group of individuals who are local to the individual being tracked and not from the population at large.
At the conclusion of Phase I, we will have developed a set of algorithms whose output is a signature that can be used to track a subject of interest and we will have shown that we can follow an individual when there are gaps in the coverage similar to what would be experienced in a "masking" scenario. At the end of Phase II, the algorithms we developed will have shown that we can maintain continuous, high confidence tracking of persons within a security perimeter.
At the beginning of Phase I, TRL 4. The overall system will be in the prototype stage at the end of Phase I, TRL 5. The hardware is commercially available and in large scale production. The software approach will have been implemented as a MatLab program.
