Closely-spaced, co-channel (same time and frequency) signals, interference, and jamming can severely degrade the performance of communication, radar, and signals intercept systems. The ability to maintain communications in operational scenarios encountering closely-spaced, co-channel signals using signal processing techniques will provide the Navy with increased operational capability without the need for increasing the amount of space required by existing antennas. Adaptive signal processing of receive antenna element outputs can suppress cochannel interference and separate communication signals of interest to allow copy and analysis of the communication signals. These spatial nulling techniques are very effective when the interference and the communication signals are well separated in angle of arrival (i.e. in the sidelobe of the unadapted beam) and can be designed to work when the angular separation becomes small. Alternative algorithm (and variations) for controlling adaptation are available with performance, cost (complexity), and applicability (scenario) tradeoffs. ISL proposes to explore signal processing techniques which extract the original transmitted signal from an environment of closely-spaced communication signals, interference, and jamming which way arrive from angles close to that of the communication signals.
