Abstract

THE PROPOSAL OUTLINES A CONCEPT FOR A DEVICE WHICH WILL DETECT THE INCORRECT INSTALLATION OF A CHILD SAFETY SEAT IN AN AUTOMOBILE AND ADVISE THE USER OF THE CONDITION. IN THE PROPOSED PROGRAM, ACUMEN ENGINEERING/ANALYSIS, INC. WILL DEVELOP THE DEVICE TOA PROTOTYPE STAGE TO DEMONSTRATE ITS TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY. IN ADDITION, COST ESTIMATES FOR A MASS-PRODUCED VERSION OF THE INTELLIGENT CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS (ICRS) WILL BE DEVELOPED TO EVALUATE THE COMMERCIAL VIABILITY OF THE PRODUCT. THE PROPOSED PROGRAM INCLUDES SEVEN TASKS. IN TASK 1, DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE PRODUCT WILL BE PREPARED. IN TASK 2, APPROPRIATE SENSORS WIL BE SELECTED AND THESE SENSORS WILL BE USED IN TASK 3 TO COLLECT BASELINE DATA. A "BRADBOARD" ICRS WILL BE BUILT IN TASK 4 TO EVALUATE THE CONCEPTUAL APPROACH AND A PRELIMINARY DESIGN FOR THE DEVICE HARDWARE WILL BE DEVELOPED IN TASK 5 TO FORM A BASIS FOR MANUFACTURED COST ESTIMATES. A PROTOTYPE ICRS WILL BE BUILT IN TASK 6 AND A FINAL REPORT WILL BE PRODUCED IN TASK 7.
