Abstract

Current designs for rural safety mailboxes combined with a lack of safety design regulations, produce a hazardous situation for errant rural motorists. When impacted, rural mailboxes have been shown to dislodge from their posts and penetrate automobile windshields. In addition, rural residents are faced with a constant maintenance problem from winter snow plows, vandals, and vehicle impacts. A need exists for a rural safety mailbox which addresses these concerns. Adian Engineering proposes a design for such a mailbox. The mailbox is a single unit design combining box and post into a unitized device that eliminates separation. The lightweight plastic devices has a davit shaped post section that allows the box to swing clear of impacts from cars and plows. Adian has presented a logical development plan leading to a prototype device in Phase I.
