65329 This project will develop a closed loop control system using high temperatures electronics and optical devices to provide real time data analysis for more efficient oil well stimulation. The control system could be implemented in 600¿C environments for extended periods of time. High temperature sapphire and coated silica optical fiber sensors will be used to acquire temperature, pressure, flow, and content data so that well stimulation is maintained at optimum levels of efficiency. In Phase I, each sensor will be tested in harsh environments and the results will be used to develop a closed-loop control system. This system will be tested in a controlled environment to ensure proper calibration of the system parameters. Actual well testing will be conducted when the prototype system is completed. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: Increased stimulation efficiency should lead to lower costs per barrel or cubic foot of product. As the search for energy sources increases, the need for a more controlled, efficient recovery of resources will be demanded by the gas and oil companies.
