Abstract

This research project will investigate the use of optical-fiber sensors within a solid rocket motor case. THese sensors will be multi-functional and possess the ability to measure displacement (or strain) and temperature. They will be capable of embedment "in-site" or can be bonded to the exterior of motors that have already been manufactured. If successful, the effect of forces exerted on the solid rocket motor during storage or operational loads could be measured. These devices will be capable of monitoring strain in real time -- allowing a constant vigilance of the state-of-stress during aging and changing loading profiles. This technology will increase the ability of the engineer to assess the cure cycle during manufacture, safety aspects, state of repair, and expected service-life of the motor. This research project will build on existing optical-fiber sensor technology to meet the Army and Department of Defense (DoD) needs. It has commercial potential within other government agencies and in the private sector. Three specific outcomes will result from Phase I 1) Development of techniques to place the fiber-optic sensors within the motor case; 2) Identification of test samples to verify the structural integrity of the case material; and 3) Preliminary analysis of the effect of the optical-fibers on the structural integrity of the motor and specimens.
