Abstract

Currently manufactured aerospace composites absorb water vapor to varying degrees. This moisture absorption adds weight to the composite, however, it lowers the glass transition temperature. And, subsequently, the ultimate strength of the resin holding the composite together, in the total composite matrix. For aerospace vehicles that slip the bonds of Earth and enter the vacume of space, any composite components and structures will begin to outgas as soon as the external atmospheric pressure on the vehicle drops. the moisture in the composite comes from the Earth's atmosphere. The contractors waterproof three minute cure polyurethane enamel will coat and seal a composite component, preventing moisture absorption, as well as being compatible with metals and other materials. The R & D will validate the contractor's unique family of resins. In addition, this environmentally safe resin family will be moved toward commercialization. Potential commercial applications include CFRP, composite optical mirrors, replacing current aerospace resins used in composite manufacture, and providing true waterproof resins for tough environmental conditions.
