Coherent Technologies, Inc. (CTI) proposes to develop an eyesafe Multiple Intgegrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) laser transponder for use in Tactical Engagement Simulations (TES). The new MILES transponder will provide for eyesore operation while 1) enhancing the laser engagement range, 2) reducing the probability of false alarms and missed hits, and 3) providing superior penetration through obscurant clouds and poor weather conditions. The approach will capitalize upon innovative optical designs developed by CTI for military laser radar systems. The baseline technology is a Quasi-Phase-Matched Optical Parametric Oscillator (QPM-OPO) frequency converter pumped by laser diodes. For completeness, system-level performance analyses will assess the cost-effectiveness and field-worthiness of competing technologies such as optical fiber lasers, and diode lasers alone. Coupling in-house expertise for each of the candidate technologies to CTI's proven, turnkey field and flight-worthy electro-optic system development will facilitate new low-cost MILES hardware and dual-use remote sensing products. Phase I will, 1) produce system level signal-to-noise ratio assessments for 1.5 to 5 micron wavelength transponders, including scintillation, face, extinction and optical receiver noise statistics; 2) establish quantitative comparisons of the capering candidate technologies; and 3) execute risk reduction easurements to ensure technical and cost feasibility for Phase II hardware deliverables.
