Abstract

There are currently no fire warning systems in use at ammunition storage areas. This is due to the lack of a detection and warning system that is capable of operation in large areas where there are multiple background sources. Early detection and suppression of fires in hazardous areas can save lives as well as millions of dollars in lost weapons and ammunition. We propose a fire-detection and warning system that is capable of detecting fires over large areas and at long ranges in the presence of a dynamnic background environment. Our approach emphasizes a small, lightweight, low-cost, and rugged fire-detection and warning system that is fieldable in an outdoor environment. High false-alarm rates and lack of range prevent current fire detection systems from being utilized in large areas such as warehouses and forests. Our approach provides an inexpensive fire-detection sensor that will provide early detection in these situations. Early detection will prevent the loss of life and property
