Proposed is the technical development and design of the electronics and cooling systems for a 1 megawatt cryogenically cooled inverter suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including Uninterruptable Power Suplies (UPS) and motors in the +1000 HP range. The proposed work will provide a logical progression to the development that has already been done by American Superconductor Corp. In previous work, we have designed, built and tested cryogenically cooled power inverters that provide 100 and 330 kW of power conversion. In a Phase II implementation, the 1 megawatt inverter will be built and integrated with a cryogenic cooler. The resulting system will be implemented as a motor drive and tested with a 1000 HP motor.
