Abstract

Developing interactive and adaptive courses on the Internet can be very expensive. The Internet technology will be a viable solution to the education and training problem only if the cost of developing new instructional products can be made comparable to costs for traditional instruction. This focuses attention directly on the software tool that is used for the creation of interactive instructional systems on Internet: the authoring, system for Internet courseware delivery. This proposal describes an Internet Multimedia Authoring System for creating adaptive and interactive instructions using the Internet in a timely and cost effective manner. The key ideas in the proposed authoring system are that it separates the content knowledge from the program that delivers instructions and it breaks the instructional delivery program into smaller pieces of programs: instructional templates. These key ideas make it possible to download the piece of knowledge to be delivered and the piece of program code used to deliver the knowledge from the Web server to the Web client.
