Project will demonstrate the feasibility of combining signatures from multiple sensor domains to the problem of detecting, localizing and characterizing an underground facility. The Phase I effort will focus on establishing, integrating, and validating models for the source and propagation phenomenologies associated with electromagnetic, seismic, and acoustic signatures of mechanical and electromechanical equipment operating within or in the vicinity of an underground facility, and demonstrating how data from these sensors can be fused in order to reduce uncertainties associated with detection and identification of these types of equipment. The product of the Phase I effort will be a prototype forward modeling system that will demonstrate the ability to model seismic and electromagnetic signatures associated with electromechanical equipment operating within an underground facility and their propagation. The final product of the Phase II effort will be an enhanced prototype system incorporating a CAD-styleinterface for specifying facility models, equipment locations, and surrounding media. Additional sensor types such as optical, infrared and magnetic sensors will be incorporated into the model to support applications associated with indications and warnings of underground facility operation.
