Abstract

We propose to develop a simulation system that integrates CAD/CAM/CAT tools into a Virtual Manufacturing Environment, and to demonstrate the proof of concept. The proposed system will be based on the demonstrated functionality of Multi-dimensional, user-oriented Synthetic Environment, UuSE (pronounced "muse'). Developed at Sandia National Laboratories by UuSE Technologies, Inc. (principals and licensed exclusively to MTI, UuSE has demonstrated its adaptability by integrating many kinds of data into 3D, time-based representations -- including CAD-data, kinematics, structural analysis, manufacturing process simulations, FEA, CFD, supercomputer models, sonar, command and control scenarios, MRI, CTscans, applications programs -- while simultaneously displaying text, photographs and video. These basic functionalities will allow UuSE users to access, process, manipulate and integrate many CAD, CAM, CAT and other models and simulations. When integrated with UuSE's ability to enable asynchronous, networked collaborative environments, these demonstrated capabilities can integrate all the elements necessary to create the interactive Virtual Manufacturing Environment. UuSE is a wrap-around synthetic environment shell, designed to enhance human-computer collaboration. Both hardware and software independent, it provides interactive user tools, is designed for realtime operations, and supports and displays simultaneous heterogeneous environments, e. g., flat screen displays, 3D and VR displays, audio and kinesthetic devices.
