Abstract

We will demonstrate the feasibility of a new type of airblast pressure sensor which will provide valid overpressure histories for airblast waves travelling in directions up to 90 degrees or more to the direction with which the sensor is aligned. Our specific technical objectives for Phase I are: 1) to develop a quantitative sensor design for assessment of feasibility, 2) to predict the expected performance of the sensor, and 3) define the hardware and software requirements for data acquisition and analysis. We will use analytic and computational fluid dynamic models to develop our design. A proof-of-principle test will be conducted using a small laboratoy shock tube, and further calculations will be done to predict how the sensor will respond to realistic blast loading. A mockup will be used to assist in definition of data acquisition and analysis requirements.
