Abstract

The proposed prototype Operational Trainer for the FFG-7 AAW Combat System will provide the US Navy with a means for training the FFG-7 AAW combat team to operate their equipment in condition 1 watch stations. Each watch station will be provided with the ability to train as they fight by allowing continuous on-board AAW training that includes all elements of the combat system with interactions as appropriate to demonstrate the intercommunication and functionality of the sensors, command and control system, and the weapons system. The FFG-7 Operational Trainer will use high speed digital electronics to generate signals into the FFG-7 MK 92, IFF, SPS-49, and SPS-55 systems to ensure a high degree of realism in a simulated tactical scenario. This will permit effective training when radiation and antenna rotation are prohibited. This embedded trainer will generate, identify, and insert targets with appropriate dynamics, sensors, and weapons that result in a simulator that will exercise the entire combat process from target detection to standard missile or gun engagement and allow for the evaluation and identification of both individual and Combat System Team strengths and weaknesses.
