We propose to develop software algorithms which can be integrated in a Distributive Interactive Simulation (DIS) environment and which model the following wartime effects. Explosion fireball and smoke Building structure failures Debris throws and roll Drift of chemical agents and smoke The Phase I development of these algorithms will be accomplished utilizing established scale modeling principles and blast effects software. Software exists which reliably predicts weapons effects such as those described above. In Phase II, this software will be supplemented with physical, small scale model testing to fill data gaps as necessary. The use of physical modeling is well established for simulating blast effects and structural response due to explosions and has been utilized to develop empirical relationships concerning these effects. We propose to use a combination of existing software and physical explosion testing to develop the technical basis for predicting wartime environments. The technical results of the software and physical modeling will be programmed onto algorithms which can be integrated into a DIS environment. The existing software cannot be used directly for simulations due to run-time requirements. We plan to develop simple algorithms which can be programmed for real-time computer applications.
