65287 The high moisture content and low density of biomass degrades its value as a fuel for electricity production. By reducing moisture content and increasing density, the Btu content of the biomass increases, along with its compatibility with boiler equipment; in addition, shipping costs and biomass decay are decreased. Unfortunately, the costs to accomplish this objective are excessive. This project will develop double drum separator (DDS) technology to densify the biomass and remove the moisture as liquid, thereby minimizing the cost-per-ton of water removed relative to conventional drying techniques. In Phase I, a small scale version of the DDS concept will be constructed, and the feasibility of dewatering and densifying biomass fuel sources will be tested. Also, using manufacturer inputs, costs for the DDS concept will be determined and compared with alternative techniques to determine economic feasibility. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The DDS concept can be used to dewater biomass, sludge, and the other materials at low cost. The economical removal of the water will promote the use of biomass for power production, and thereby lead to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
