Abstract

"High performance suspended seat technology offers significant advantages in reducing acute injuries, long term disability, and fatigue associated with high-speed maritime operations. Our proposed concept will apply a systems design approach to addressingthe needs of SOF personnel over all conditions, particularly rough seas. Our novel concept eliminates the inherent weaknesses of existing suspended seat solutions. Rod Millen Special Vehicles has solicited input from subject matter experts United StatesMarine, Inc. and Battelle Memorial Institute in the areas of maritime craft/environment and human factors, respectively. This, combined with RMSV's advanced active damper technology, positions the team to offer an integrated, commercially viable solutionto this difficult problem. Benefits include: reduced occurrence of acute injuries such as broken bones, ruptured discs, dislocated joints, torn ligaments, and torn muscles; reduced operator and passenger fatigue, reduced long term effects of shock andvibration including soreness, bruises, arthritis, or internal bleeding. The requirement for a lightweight, self-contained high-performance suspended seat has commercial application across a large number of markets. For example, manufacturers of recreational watercraft, truck drivers, border patrol officers, and even operatorsof military ground vehicles like the HMMVW can benefit from a high-performance suspended seat.
